The end of this week has brought a little flurry of information about the differences between iPhone and Android users. First up, Admob has released the results of a survey that says the iPhone is twice as popular as comparable smartphones in both young and old demographics. Unfortunately, we can only guess as to why (it would be a little more interesting if either age showed a preference for one phone over another), but it seems the iPhone has yet another remarkable trait: appealing to users of all ages. No wonder Apple is jumping in on the iPad -- they really do have a pre-release audience.

But they can't sit on their laurels for too long -- according to a report at Myxer's Boombox (via Fortune), the Android OS is picking up the pace, especially in what city folk call the "flyover states." Android use of the program has actually surpassed iPhone users in Montana, the Dakotas, and Arizona and New Mexico, and the numbers are close in the Midwest, including Kansas and Missouri. That's interesting -- that could have something to do with the distribution of Apple retail stores, or maybe just more urban center dwellers are drawn to the iPhone. DC seems to be the exception, as Virginia and Maryland are much more Android, but otherwise, if you're in a state with a big population center, odds are that you own an iPhone. Fascinating.

Thursday, Briefings.com, CNBC and a passel of other market analysts predicted that a 4 for 1 stock split would be announced at the Apple Shareholder Meeting. This rumor moved the market, but there are conflicting opinions to why. First, for the uninitiated, a stock split is a zero sum game. One interpretation is that a firm considers its stock too highly priced for the average consumer and decides to split. For example, let's say that Apple is trading for $200 and you have one share. If a 4 for 1 stock split takes place, you will wind up 4 shares, instead of 1, but each share will be valued at $50. Did you gain or lose any money? No. It's all on paper. However, to those not familiar with the Buttonwood tree, and that's a lot of us, it sounds like 'quick buy Apple and you'll be getting 4 times as much'. The case for this sort of stupidity is well made by Barrons.

Stock splits are nothing new to AAPL. They've split 2 for 1 three time in the past, in June 1987, June 2000 and February 2005.

There are two general schools of thought on the reason behind stock splits, and they are total opposites. The first theory is that a company will split a stock if it is in trouble to allow lower dollar investors to buy their shares at half the price and thus incur less risk. The other school of thought is that a good company realizes their stock is just too expensive for the small trader who has some cash on the sidelines. It is meant to give the small guy an easier way to buy some stock without needing to commit the $200 for a share. Both sides have their points and, to an extent, both points are based on smoke and mirrors since they do not effect the worth of the company or the aggregate value of the stock by one penny.
Unless I read the word 'drop' wrong, it seems to me that the stock was down, and then the rumor came in and the stock shot up. There was no word of a split at the shareholder meeting, but as a long term AAPL watcher, I wouldn't count out a split happening in the near future. However that's just me.

Another story that seems to be gaining traction, for no good reason that I can surmise, is that Apple will declare a dividend of $33.00 per share, returning 16.66% to investors. Doing so would mean relinquishing 75% of its moneybags this year while taxes on dividends and passive income are low. It would also take Apple's walking around money from from $40 billion to $10 billion. I really wonder where this one got started since Apple hasn't declared a dividend since 1995, and playing Scrooge McDuck seems to keep Steve happy. Although Apple isn't known for buying a lot of companies scatter-shot, it's quite nice to be able to buy what you want when the right opportunity presents itself without worrying about nasty things like financing. And I haven't heard much, if any, grousing directed at Apple not forking over the dividends. Tell me if I'm wrong, but this seems like a non-story.

With all these stories whirling about, Apple went up $5.97 to close at $202.86 on Thursday. What do you make of this? Reading all the interpretations of Thurday's action makes my brain hurt.

The bottom line is: nothing happened.

The Reader's View is our weekly roundup of some of the most upbeat, thoughtful, or just plain good comments that have been published by TUAW readers. This week, we still have some post-Macworld Expo 2010 comments coming in, as well as discussion of several posts that attracted positive comments this week.

The first comment, from Ed P, was added to David Winograd's coverage of his interview with Roland Saekow of BearExtender. It appears that Ed was actually at Macworld watching the interview being done: "Hey, I was watching this while ya'll were broadcasting! Macworld was Haute! Really looking forward to next year!"

We are too, Ed! Next, David's interview of Mitch Waite, developer of iBird Pro for iPhone, generated some very positive words about the app from aptly-named reader nature: "iBird is one of the best apps I have ever found. The comments about the illustrations not being correct is obviously from a perfectionist who does not appreciate what a leap forward this app is. The average person does not need perfect drawings, they need great functionality and good photos and illustrations. iBird has those and a lot more. Like its amazing search engine that has taught me how to identify birds so that my life list is now at 222 in less than 3 months. It's amazing to me how the critics come out and jump all over good products rather than appreciate what has been done."

Erica Sadun's insight is always technically on target and sometimes controversial. Her recent post "TUAW redux: The future of iPhone OS and Mac OS," created its fair share of comments. One, from reader frank l, seemed to capture the essence of what what a future OS should be: "Extrapolation into the future improves with more data points. We may have further insights after the iPad and its successors are more familiar to us.

As I see it, the future of operating systems can be described in a single word, 'adaptive.' The idea is that devices will adapt to users, uses and available resources and do so in a relatively seamless fashion. In this Brave New World, there will be less for end users to learn as the sophistication of their use grows.

The OS will have a core with modules being added and jettisoned as circumstances change. The Adaptive OS."

TUAW's Michael Jones has a wonderful way of explaining things to Mac users. In his post "Mac 101: Navigating OS X with your keyboard," he spoke to Mac owners new and old about how to use your Mac without a mouse. Reader Robert gave us a tip on two useful keyboard shortcuts he uses: "I've had to work with 'mouseless Macs' every so often at the university computer labs. Here's some useful ones:

Access the Menu Bar: Control-F2
Access the Dock: Control-F3

Note that if your keyboard has an fn key, you'll need to use that in conjunction with the above key commands, or else they won't work. Then you can use the arrow keys and the return key or space bar to navigate and select menu and dock items."

Thanks for that information, Robert! Michael will be publishing a followup to that post some time soon. Next, a number of TUAW regulars made comments on my post "TUAW review: Smoother iPhone browsing with VanillaSurf." Many readers liked VanillaSurf, but couldn't get it to import bookmarks. Reader Jim figured out how to activate this feature in the app: "I finally got it to work the bookmark importing to work. I removed the profile in Firefox [v3.6] and then relaunched it so that it lets me import my Safari bookmarks [Safari is my default browser and has the latest bookmarks] Then exported the bookmarks from Firefox and tried the sync again and it worked! yay!"

Finally, it's always fun when a reader like doelcm can give the TUAW bloggers a good laugh. He responded to our post "Rumor: UK iPad pricing" with this: "Dear TUAW. Could you please put the word "rumor" (or "rumour" in this case) in the title when you're posting unsubstantiated information.

Oh, wait....never mind."

Katy Huberty von den Marktanalytikern Morgan Stanley geht davon aus, dass Apple bis zum Ende des Kalenderjahres 6 Millionen iPads verkaufen wird.
Apple wird demnach Ende März die ersten iPads ausgeben, und – als Resultat auf eine Nachfrage, die die eigenen Erwartungen übersteigt – wohl auch zusätzliche Content-Deals vorstellen. Das iPad ziele auf den Marktbereich von Notebooks unter 800 $ ab, in dem pro Jahr weltweit 120 Millionen Geräte (US: 30 Millionen) verkauft werden.

Der Macobserver berichtet außerdem, dass es auch zum iPhone eine Stellungnahme von Huberty gibt: Ein Stolperstein auf dem Weg zu weiterem Erfolg seien beim iPhone vor allem die Gesamtkosten. Apple würde demnach wahrscheinlich nach einer Möglichkeit suchen, Daten- und Sprachdienste für iPhone-Besitzer zu senken.

Schon morgens um 10 ist der Wald voller Spaziergänger und Biker. Am Fuß des Merkurs hat man die Wahl zwischen steil und sausteil, letzteres ist auch im gehenden Zustand eine Qual.

Nicht ganz, aber im Großen und Ganzen eben doch – zu diesem Schluss kommt man bei einem Review von MobileCrunch.

Das Display des Nexus One zeige zwar eine gute Helligkeit, kurze Reaktionszeit, und eine bessere Auflösung, in einigen Details hapert es dann aber doch: Zum Beispiel an der Farbtiefe (16 bit im Vergleich zu 18 bit Dithering beim iPhone).

Auch das PenTile Subpixel-Layout ist nicht optimal – es sollte zwar nur selten merkliche Probleme machen, kann aber Artefakte bei Grautönen erzeugen.

Insgesamt ist OLED natürlich die Zukunft der Displays. Noch ist die Technologie allerdings in den Kinderschuhen, und kann mit ausgereiften LCD-Displays nicht konkurrieren.

Es ist schon beinahe lustig, wie viele Gewinnspiele es derzeit um das iPad gibt. Viele bekannte aber auch eine Menge an dubiosen Firmen nehmen an dieser Gewinnspielschämme teil. Sicherlich muss man bei den bekannten Apple-Händlern die so etwas veranstalten, nicht sonderlich aufpassen. Aber bei vielen anderen, die niemand kennt und die offenbar den Sinn haben, [...]

Apple ist bereits bekannt für explodierende Geräte. Klar ist jedoch, dass ohne Fremdeinwirkungen wohl einige Geräte weniger explodiert wären. In einer Amerikanischen Schule, der Pentucket Regional High School in West Newbury gab es wieder so einen Vorfall: Ein iPod explodierte aufgrund einer Defekten Batterie.

Nach einem Kommentar von den Newburyport Daily News Online ist der iPod aber durch Fremdeinwirkung explodiert, also ist Apple nicht daran schuld:

The Ipod did not just explode. It was broken so a kid took the entire thing apart and was rubbing wires against the battery, which became very hot, then exploded. This is not a faulty product that caused a danger to people. This was bored kids, in a classroom with a substitute all week, who found a dangerous way to entertain themselves.

Anscheinend hatte das Gerät bereits vorher einen Defekt. Ein Kind rieb Drähte gegen eine Batterie, bis diese heiß wurde und dann explodierte.

Für komische Vorfälle ist Amerika bereits bekannt. In diesem Video hatte ein Professor keine Lust mehr auf sein Notebook und übergießt es deshalb mit Stickstoff:

Aktionen vermutlich nur im CEBIT- Zeitraum gültig

Anlässlich der CEBIT ist die Deutschland- Version des Navigationsprogramms NDrive (Link), welches wir euch hier schon vor längerem vorgestellt hatten, derzeit kostenlos erhältlich. Die Laufzeit der Aktion ist wahrscheinlich bis zum 6. März begrenzt, alle die eine vollwertige Offline- Navigationslösung interessiert sind sollten also schnell zuschlagen.
Ebenso ist derzeit die Applikation MobileTV der Telekom kostenlos nutzbar, auch die Fußballübertragungen auf "LigaTotal" werden ohne Zusatzkosten angeboten. Ob es sich dabei um eine Werbeaktion mit begrenzter Dauer oder um ein Versehen handelt war bisher nicht zu erfahren.

Update: Wie es aussieht ist NDrive nur zeitlich begrenzt nutzbar und läuft am 10.03.10 ab. Ebenso scheint die kostenlose MobileTV-Aktion nun abgelaufen oder der Fehler erkannt zu sein.

Update: Ein Leser hat uns soeben per e-Mail darauf hingewiesen, dass das App mit Ablauf des 09.02.2010 seinen Dienst aufgibt. Diese NDrive Version ist somit nur während der CeBit nutzbar. Schade eigentlich. (Danke Micha)

Vom 02. bis 06. März 2010 findet die diesjährige CeBit in Hannover statt. Viele Hersteller und Entwickler nutzen die Messe, um für ihre Produkte, Dienstleistungen oder Applikationen Sonderaktionen anzubieten. Einer der ersten App Store Entwickler hat nun ein interessantes Angebot parat. So bietet NDrive Navigation Systems die Navigationssoftware "NDrive Germany CeBit" derzeit kostenlos an. Als Kartenmaterial kommen die Karten von NAVTEQ zum Einsatz.

Wie die Entwickler schreiben, bieten NDrive und NAVTEQ allen Besuchern der CeBit 2010 die Navigationssoftware mit deutschem Kartenmaterial an. So wird das iPhone 3G / oder iPhone 3GS zum voll funktionsfähigem Navigationsgerät. Die Liste der NDrive Funktionen ist lang. Unter anderem bietet das App eine einfache und intuitive Benutzeroberfläche, eine komplette Multi-Touch Oberfläche und Points of Interest.

Es ist allerdings fraglich, ob die NDrive Navigationslösung mit den großen Anbietern wie TomTom oder Navigon mithalten kann.

Das iPad ist noch nicht einmal erschienen, da macht die Welt sich schon Gedanken darüber, was Steve Jobs uns als Nächstes magisches präsentieren wird. Wir wissen es bereits, 2012 kommt das iBoard mit 20-Finger Multitouch gefolgt 2014 von der iMat… mit Flash Unterstützung (via Gizmodo.com)

Apple setzt bereits beim Telefonieren einen Sensor ein, der das Touchscreen während eines Telefonats deaktiviert. Vor kurzem hat Apple ein neues Patent angemeldet, das die Lautstärke automatisch anpassen soll.

Es wird dabei die Entfernung zum Ohr gemessen, und die Lautstärke dementsprechend angepasst. Ist das Gerät weiter entfernt, wird die Lautstärke erhöht, ist das Gerät näher am Ohr reduziert.

Walk & Ride gibt es am iPhone und iPod Touch bereits für Hamburg und München, ab sofort auch für Frankfurt und Köln. Die Funktionen unterscheiden sich dabei nicht zwischen denen von Hamburg und München. Nachdem vor kurzem 40 Final Cut Pro Entwickler bei Apple gekündigt wurden, wollte sich Mike Contaxis von Macsoda eigentlich nur nach der Zukunft des Produkts erkundigen. Die Antwort von Steve Jobs (“No worries. FCP is alive and well.”) enthielt aber auch eine etwas Themenfremde Info:

Beim Prüfen des Emails auf seine Echtheit fiel Seth Weintraub von 9to5Mac vor allem die X-Mailer-Bezeichnung auf: “iPhone Mail (7D11)” beschreibt nämlich iPhone OS 3.1.2 und nicht die aktuelle Version 3.1.3 (“8E18″) oder gar eine 4.0 Betaversion.

Weintraub war übrigens auch so freundlich, die Upgrade-Anleitung für Steve Jobs am Ende des Artikels anzufügen.

United Maps, Entwickler der Walk & Ride Karten, hat für die iPhone und iPod Touch Apps Walk & Ride Hamburg und Walk & Ride München das Update 1.3 veröffentlicht. Die CeBIT 2010 hat noch nicht begonnen und schon geht das Einsammeln von Geschenken los. Meist sind es nette Prospekte oder mal eine CD oder ähnliches, selten aber ist es was richtig brauchbares, was man auch morgen noch gerne nutzt.

NDrive scheint sich das Gleiche gedacht zu haben und hat sich dazu entschlossen, extra zurCeBIT2010 eine Sonderedition von NDrive Germany herauszugeben. Vom 2.03.2010 bis zum Ende der CeBIT, dem 6. März 2010 kann man sich das Programm kostenlos auf seinem iPhone installieren.

NDrive kann nicht so ganz mit den Großen wie Navigon oder TomTom mithalten, aber zum einen ist es für den Preis unschlagbar und zum anderen ist es eine sehr interessante Umsetzung einer Navigationssoftware. Man sollte hier unbedingt noch heute zugreifen und dieses kostenlose Angebot wahrnehmen.

Die Applikation kann mit allen Orten in Deutschland umgehen und wird mit dem Kartenmaterial von NAVTEQ, einem der führenden Anbieter im Bereich Kartenmaterial versorgt. Alle Karten werden offline gespeichert, wobei der Speicherbedarf von nicht einmal 400MB für die App inkl. der deutschen Maps recht gering gehalten ist. Viele brauchen auch nicht mehr, als einfach Deutschland als Karte.

[UPDATE] Die App funktioniert nur bis zum 10. März 2010 und muss dann käuflich erworben werden.

Über Nacht veröffentlichte Palm sein Firmware Update auf Version 1.4 für Sprint, O₂ und Movistar, Verizon, Bell und Telcel Nutzer müssen noch weiter warten. Vor zwei Tagen veröffentlichten wir bereits ein inoffizieller Changelog der neuen Version, wussten aber nicht, welche Neuerungen tatsächlich eintreten würden. Mit der Videoaufnahmefunktion hatten wir bereits Recht gehabt. Natürlich hat sich noch so Einiges mehr verbessert und verändert. Den offiziellen Changelog gibt es nach dem Break.

Mit runden 38 MB dauerte der Download durch den großen Ansturm der Firmware sehr lange. Den Download findet ihr wie immer in der Update Funktion auf dem Palm Pre. Im Gegensatz zum iPhone benötigt man keine Software auf dem PC/Mac, um die Firmware installieren zu können. Neben den neuen Funktionen der Firmware findet man zudem noch drei neue und kostenlose Apps von EA: Sims 3, Need for Speed und Memory.

• Wenn der Cursor in einem bearbeitbaren Textfeld steht, ist das neue Anwendungsmenü Alle auswählen verfügbar.
• Das neue Anwendungsmenü Jetzt Synchronisieren bietet Ihnen eine zweite Option, Ihre Kalenderkonten manuell zu synchronisieren (zusätzlich zur Schaltfläche Jetzt synchronisieren unter Einstellungen und Konten).
• Zur Optimierung der Akkulaufzeit verbessert diese Version die Kalendersynchronisation in Gebieten mit schwacher Netzabdeckung. Außerdem wurde das Standardintervall für die Synchronisation mit Online-Kalenderkonten verlängert. Dies trifft nicht auf Exchange-Konten zu.
• Durch die Bearbeitung eines Google-Kalenderereignis auf dem Telefon wird nun keine E-Mail-Erinnerung mehr in Google im Internet erstellt.
• Diese Version enthält Verbesserungen der Kalenderanzeige mit einer verständlicheren Anzeige von Vormittag (AM) und Nachmittag (PM) sowie einer verbesserten Uhrzeitanzeige.

Kamera

• Mit der neuen Camcorder-Funktion in der Kamera können Sie jederzeit und überall Videos aufnehmen. Nach einer Aufnahme können Sie das Video unter „Videos“ bearbeiten, es direkt auf YouTube oder Facebook hochladen oder es per E-Mail oder MMS verschicken.

• Wenn Sie eine Universalsuche ausführen, wird die Globale Adressensuche nun als eine Kontaktsuchoption angezeigt.
• Wenn Sie einen Kontakt aus einem Mac-Adressbuch importieren, werden die entsprechenden Felder korrekt in der Kontaktanwendung angezeigt.
• Wenn Sie das Anwendungsmenü Alle auswählen wählen, wird der Inhalt aller Eingabefelder markiert.
• Zur Optimierung der Akkulaufzeit verbessert diese Version die Kontaktsynchronisation in Gebieten mit schwacher Netzabdeckung. Außerdem wurde das Standardintervall für die Synchronisation mit Online-Kontaktkonten verlängert. Dies trifft nicht auf Exchange-Konten zu.

• Diese Version beinhaltet die neue Option Sicheres vollständiges Löschen. Ein sicheres vollständiges Löschen dauert wesentlich länger als ein normaler Löschvorgang.

E-Mail

• Unter Einstellungen und Konten können Sie Kalenderbenachrichtigungstöne anpassen. Sie können aus den Optionen Stumm, Systemton, Klingelton und Vibrieren wählen. Die Option Klingelton beinhaltet eine noch größere Auswahl an Benachrichtungstönen.
• Über das neue Anwendungsmenü Sortieren können Sie die Nachrichtenliste in jedem E-Mail-Ordner sortieren. Es stehen die Sortieroptionen Nach Datum, Nach Absender und Nach Betreff zur Auswahl. Durch Tippen auf die aktuell ausgewählte Sortieroption ändert sich die Reihenfolge von aufsteigend zu absteigend bzw. von absteigend zu aufsteigend. Durch Tippen auf eine andere Sortieroption erfolgt die neue Sortierung in aufsteigender Reihenfolge.
• Wenn Sie eine Nachricht mit einem oder mehreren Anhängen erhalten, wird die Datei, die als erste vollständig heruntergeladen wurde, automatisch geöffnet.
• Sie können in der Betreffzeile auf eine Telefonnummer tippen, um sie zu wählen, oder auf eine URL, um sie im Webbrowser zu öffnen.
• Falls der Nachrichtentext eine Telefonnummer enthält und Sie diese gedrückt halten, wird ein Menü mit den Optionen Anrufen, SMS oder Zu Kontakten hinzufügen (falls die Nummer dort noch nicht gespeichert ist) angezeigt.
• Falls der Nachrichtentext eine E-Mail-Adresse enthält und Sie diese gedrückt halten, wird ein Menü mit den Optionen E-Mail oder Zu Kontakten hinzufügen (falls die Adresse dort noch nicht gespeichert ist) angezeigt.

• Wenn Sie eine Nachricht mit Anhängen weiterleiten, die nicht heruntergeladen wurden, lädt die E-Mail-Anwendung die Anhänge zunächst herunter und leitet die E-Mail anschließend mit den angehängten Dateien weiter.
• Wenn Sie in einem Exchange-Konto einen oder mehrere Anhänge einer empfangenen Nachricht löschen und die Nachricht anschließend weiterleiten, hängt die E-Mail-Anwendung die Anhänge nicht mehr an die weitergeleitete Nachricht an.
• Sie können eine Nachricht vom Papierkorb in den Posteingang eines Yahoo!- Kontos verschieben.
  Wenn Sie eine Nachricht mit Anhang von einem Hotmail-Konto zu einem anderen Hotmail-Konto senden, wird die Nachricht korrekt mit Anhang gesendet.
• Wenn Sie eine E-Mail senden, die Satzpunkte aus einem SMTP-Konto enthält, werden diese Punkte korrekt in der E-Mail-Anwendung des Empfängers angezeigt.
• Wenn Sie auf eine E-Mail-Nachricht mit vielen Empfängern antworten, öffnet sich der Antwortbildschirm an der Stelle, an der Sie mit der Eingabe des Textes beginnen können.
• Wenn Sie in der E-Mail-Anwendung eine Globale Adressenliste nach einem Kontakt durchsuchen, zeigt die Anwendung die gleichen Suchergebnisse wie bei einer Suche in den Kontakten an.
• Sonderzeichen werden in der Betreffzeile einer empfangenen Nachricht korrekt angezeigt.
• Falls Sie bei der Arbeit in einer Anwendung durch eine Aktion die E-Mail-Anwendung öffnen (z. B. durch Tippen auf eine E-Mail-Adresse in den Kontakten), wird die E-Mail-Anwendung als Vollbild angezeigt (nicht als Karte).

• Sie können eine SMS oder MMS per E-Mail weiterleiten, indem Sie auf die Nachricht tippen und sie gedrückt halten und im anschließend angezeigten Menü auf die Option Via E-Mail weiterleiten tippen. Telefon

• Mehrere hintereinander folgende Anrufe an und von der gleichen Person werden nun in einem einzigen Eintrag im Anrufprotokoll gruppiert.
• Sie können in einem Anrufprotokolleintrag auf das Kontaktfoto oder -symbol tippen, um Optionen für diesen Eintrag anzuzeigen, wie z. B. eine alternative Nummer wählen, eine SMS senden, einen Kontakt öffnen oder eine Nummer als Kontakt hinzufügen. Die erweiterte Anzeige enthält Anrufdetails wie die Anruflänge und den Nummerntyp.
• Wenn Sie ein Konferenzgespräch aus zwei ausgehenden Anrufen herstellen, können Sie nun das Konferenzgespräch über ein Bluetooth-Headset beenden, falls das Headset-Modell diese Funktion unterstützt.
• Sie können die Länderliste unter den Einstellungen für Internationales Wählen durchsuchen, indem Sie den ersten Buchstaben des Ländernamen eingeben.
• Während eines Telefonats mit einem Kontakt wird durch Tippen auf das Kontaktfoto während des Anrufs der Kontakteintrag nicht mehr geöffnet.

Fotos

• Auf das Telefon kopierte Fotos werden nun unter „Fotos“, ungeachtet der Anfangsausrichtung, korrekt ausgerichtet angezeigt.

Bildschirm und Sperre

• Durch blinkende Benachrichtigungen (ein flackerndes Licht im Gestenbereich) werden Sie nun über neue E-Mails, SMS und andere Benachrichtigungen informiert. Sie können die blinkende Benachrichtigung löschen, indem Sie den Bildschirm ein- und ausschalten oder ihn entsperren. Blinkende Benachrichtigungen sind standardmäßig aktiviert, können jedoch unter Bildschirm und Sperre > Blinkende Benachrichtigungen deaktiviert werden.
• Die Bildschirmsperre unterstützt nun auch Zeitüberschreitungsintervalle, die durch einen internen Exchange-Systemadministrator zugewiesen werden.

Töne und Klingeltöne

• Diese Version enthält unter Klingeltöne neue, vom Benutzer auswählbare Benachrichtigungstöne.

System

• Diese Version bietet eine bessere Gesamt-Performance. Dazu gehören u. a. eine schnellere Ladezeit von Anwendungen und eine verlängerte Akkulaufzeit bei einer größeren Anzahl von Benutzerszenarien.
• Wenn Sie auf eine Anwendung tippen, um diese zu öffnen, erscheint nun eine Startkarte.
• Wenn Sie eine Universalsuche ausführen, wird die Globale Adressensuche nun als eine Kontaktsuchoption angezeigt.
• Wenn Sie in den Suchergebnissen der Universalsuche auf einen geöffneten Kontakteintrag tippen, wird der Eintrag geschlossen und rollt nicht vom Bildschirm.

Sicherheit

Seit Snow Leopard gibt es im QuickTime Player eine integrierte Funktion für Bildschirmaufnahmen.

Doch diese erfüllt um Längen nicht den Funktionsfumfang von Screen Flow 2. In diesem Bericht stelle ich euch das Programm vor und verlose eine Lizenz von dem Programm die Telestream bereit gestellt hat. Wer ganz leicht, jedoch mit großem Funktionsumfang am Mac Screencasts produzieren will sollte sich das Programm ScreenFlow mal unter die Lupe nehmen.

Start der Aufnahme

Wenn man das Programm startet öffnen sich die Optionen für die Bildschirmaufnahme. Dort stehen folgende Funktionen zur Auswahl

• Desktop aufnehmen von: (Falls man 2 Bildschirme hat)
• Video aufnehmen von: (Mit ScreenFlow kann man nicht nur den Bildschirm aufnehmen, sondern unteranderem eine Videoquelle dazu. Bsp. die iSight)
• Audio aufnehmen von: (Hier könnt ihr eure Audioquelle für die Aufnahme auswählen)
• Computer-Audio aufnehmen

Am Anfang muss man noch nichts mit der Auflösung e.t.c einstellen. Nun kann man die Aufnahme mit dem roten Punkt, oder der Tastenkombination Cmd Shift 2 starten. Nun wird von 5 runter gezählt und dann beginnt die Aufnahme. Jetzt wird alles aufgenommen was auf eurem Bildschirm passiert und ihr nehmt dass auf was ihr wollt.

Wollt ihr die Aufnahme beenden tut ihr dies durch das ScreenFlow Icon in der Symbolleiste oder durch die Tastenkombination Cmd Shift 2.

Funktionsumfang

Nun wird das eigentliche Programm geöffnet. ScreenFlow bietet einen großen Funktionsumfang für das schneiden, verschönern und perfektionieren.
Hier die Oberfläche des Programms:

Das Programm macht es euch möglich zwischen den verschiedenen Videos, Text oder Bildern Übergänge reinzusetzen.
Dazu legt man einfach 2 Spuren übereinander und der Übergang ersteht automatisch.

Will man den ”Grundübergang” ändern macht man einen Rechtsklick drauf und die restlichen werden angezeigt.

Viele bewundern das Programm wegen seiner Skalierungs, Zoom & Refexionsoptionen. Diese findet man unter den Video-Eigenschaften. Man kann das Video zwar mit ein paar Mausklicks im Bearbeitungsfenster skalieren, aber nicht die Optionen anwenden die man hier hat. Im folgendem Screenshot sieht man wie schön es aussehen kann wenn man ein bisschen herumspielt. So wird der Screencast zum richtigen Erlebnis. Man hätte statt der 1.Quelle (Apptouchnews Logo) auch die iSight (e.t.c) Aufnahme hinsetzen können oder ein anderes Video.

Die anderen Einstellungen für Video & Audio sind auch sehr umfangreich. Das hervorheben, abdunkeln oder ranzommen eines Zeigers oder Fensters ist kein Problem.

Will man noch eine Bildschirmaufnahme oder Audioaufnahme zum Projekt hinzufügen kann man dies unter: Ablage und Aufnahme Hinzufügen tätigen.

Exportieren

Jetzt kommt der Schitt wo die Auflösung e.t.c bestimmt wird. ScreenFlow kann das Projekt problemlos in HD-Qualität aber auch in Handy Qualität ausgeben.
Um das Video als Videodatei abzuspeichern klickt ihr auf: Ablage und dann Export.

Jetzt wird das Menü wür die Ausgabe geöffnet und ihr könnt entweder eine der Vorgaben verwenden, oder eure eigene Einstellung einstellen. Das Programm hat unteranderem die Funktion Videos direkt in Youtube hochzuladen.

Fazit: Ich würde vielleicht keine Screencasts produzieren würde es ScreenFlow nicht geben. Einmal benutzt, kein anderes mehr.

iPod touch explodiert

Mal wieder ist ein iPod touch explodiert, dies mal in der US Schule Pentucket Reginal High School.

Doch bleibt zu bezweifeln ob die Batterie einfach so explodiert ist. Es wäre nicht der erste und bestimmt nicht der letzte iPod / iPhone der wohl unter Fremdeinwirkung explodiert.

Steve Jobs nutzt noch 3.1.2.

Mike Contaxis erkundigte sich direkt bei Steve Jobs, nach der aktuellen Entwicklungsstand von Final Cut Pro. Und Steve antworte, Mike leitete die Antwort an 9to5mac weiter – beim blick auf den Quellcode lässt sich erkennen, das Steve noch die 3.1.2 Firmware (7D11) nutzt und noch nicht auf 3.1.3 geupdatet hat.

6 Millionen iPad und iPhone wird billiger?

Neben LEO nutze ich auf dem iPhone gerne die Linguee-App um englischsprachige Wörter nachzuschlagen. Allerdings trägt Linguee den BETA-Status bislang mit Grund, denn noch fehlt einiges an Vokabular – so vermisste ich kürzlich das gängige Wort mackintosh … … dafür zeigte sich, dass Wikipedia bisweilen als Wörterbuch hervorragend geeignet ist (via Wikipanion) …

Die achte Apple Woche des Jahres 2010 neigt sich langsam dem Ende entgegen. Vergleichsweise sieben ruhige Tage liegen hinter uns. Das MacBook Pro ist zur Verärgerung vieler schon wieder nicht aktualisiert worden. Allerdings gibt es ein paar neue Hinweise auf ein baldiges Update. Zunächst gab es Hinwesie auf neue Speichermodule, die die Bezeichnung "2GB bzw. 4GB DDR3 SODIMM 1333MHz Apple MacBookPro 2010" tragen. Darüberhinaus gab es erneut Hinweise auf sinkende Lagerbestände der Händler, die auf eine baldige Aktualisierung hinweisen. Wir bleiben am Ball.

Apple hat zudem diese Woche das iPhone SDK 3.2 Beta 3 für das iPad veröffentlicht. Diese Beta enthält u.a. ein Photo-App mit der Registerkarte "Camera". Dieses App könnt ihr Euch hier angucken.

Am vergangenen Donnerstag ging die iTunes Pro Aktion "10 Milliarden Downloads" zu Ende.  Der zehnmilliardste Song - "Guess Things Happen That Way" von Johnny Cash - wurde von Louie Sulcer aus Woodstock, Georgia, USA gekauft. Der Gewinner wurde von Steve Jobs persönlich per Telefon benachrichtigt und konnte sein Glück kaum glauben. Apple spendierte seine Software Aperture 3 (Apple Store Partnerlink) ein erstes Update mit der Versionsnummer 3.0.1.

Ich bin im Internet über ein interessantes Tool gestolpert, mit dem es möglich ist den iPhone/iPod Touch Arbeitsspeicher per Software zu erweitern. Es wurde von mir erfolgreich

auf meinem iPod Touch 2G getestet. Es wurden um die 70-80MB Ram freigestellt und beim iPhone sollen bis zu 188MB möglich sein.
Tutorial:
1. Ladet euch hier die Datei.

2. Mit Cyberduck (Mac) oder WinSCP (Win) oder Sonstigem über SSH (Anleitung hier) nach /var/mobile kopieren.

3. Öffnet MobileTerminal (falls nicht verhanden aus Cydia installieren.)

4. Gebt folgendes in MobileTerminal ein:

su

alpine (sofern nicht geändert)

dpkg -i PVM.deb

5. MobileTerminal schließen und iPhone / iPod Touch rebooten

An iPhone-Zubehör für die Verwendung als Universalfernbedienung gibt es inzwischen schon einiges: Neben der bereits vorgestellten L5 Remote gibt es z.B. auch ein Dock von Thinkflood (“RedEye”), und einen Dongle von Re Remote.
Neu ist das Universal Remote Case von Power A: Das IR-Modul ist hier in einem iPhone Case (kompatibel mit dem iPhone 3G und 3GS) aus Plastik verbaut, und erlaubt dadurch die Positionierung oben im Gerät -- im Gegensatz zu den Dongles.
Für 60 $ soll das Universal Remote Case in Kürze im US-amerikanischen Apple-Stores angeboten werden.

Heute stellen wir euch eine kostenlose Applikation, ein Tweak aus Cydia und ein Konzept von Apple vor. Interessant, deshalb lest euch die folgenden Kleinnews unbedingt genau durch.

NDrive von der CeBit 2010 kostenlos erhältlich

Die Navigationsapp “NDrive” für Deutschland aus dem Hause NDrive Navigation Systems und dem Kartenanbieter NAVTEQ wird als Promo-Aktion bis zum 6. März, sprich bis zum Ende der CeBit, kostenlos angeboten.
Besonders schön sehen die Karten nicht aus, einzige Highlights sind höchstens die 3D-Gebäude am Straßenrand. Aber: Einem geschenkten Gaul schaut man nicht ins Maul. Daher ladet euch die Applikation schnellstmöglich, bevor der Preis der App drastisch ansteigt. Eine Alternative zum Mobile Navigator von Navigon und TomTom stellt die App allemal dar.

“Volume Button Extender” verleiht den Volume Buttons Musik Player Funktionen

Mit dem Tweak “Volume Button Extender” aus Cydia lässt sich die derzeit spielende Musik mit dem Volume Buttons an der linken Seite des iPhones/iPod Touchs steuern.

Den Tweak findet man in der BigBoss Source oder durch eine einfache Suche im Suchen-Tab in Cydia. Dazu muss das iPhone/iPod Touch jedoch mit einem Jailbreak versehen und Cydia installiert worden sein. Die BigBoss Source befindet sich in der Community Source und ist bei einer Installation von Cydia automatisch installiert.

Automatische Lautstärke-Anpassung in einem Telefonat

Apple arbeitet nun an einem Konzept, dass die Lautstärke bei einem Telefonat durch einen Sensor automatisch reguliert. Einen Sensor besitzt das iPhone bereits. Dieser misst die Entfernung zum Gesicht und schaltet bei einem Telefonat das Display aus. Dieser würde nach Apples Konzept dann auch die Lautstärke hoch bzw. runter schalten, sprich ist das iPhone nah am Gesicht, wird die Lautstärke reduziert, ist es weit vom Ohr entfernt, wird die Lautstärke dementsprechend erhöht. Praktisch, aber ich reguliere meine Lautstärken immer noch gern manuell.

Vorrausichtlich wird am 15. März 2010 wieder eine neue App den App Store stürmen. Die Rede ist von ZombieSmash. ZombieSmash ist ein Spiel, das mit dem iPhone und iPod touch funktionieren wird.

Wobei natürlich ein iPhone 3GS bevorzugt wird um auch wirklich alle Effekte darstellen zu können.

Ziel des Spieles ist es alle Zombies zu töten, Ihr schlüpft dabei in die Rolle von “Joey“.

Das Spiel bietet 3 Spielmodi, einen Kampagnenmodus(31), einen Endlosmodus und einen “Sandboxmodus“. Man darf auf dieses Spiel sehr gespannt sein, wir werden euch weiterhin auf dem laufendem halten.

Passend zur CeBIT 2010, die vom 02.03.10 – 06.03.10 in Hannover stattfindet, werden wir jetzt von NDrive mit einer Sonderedition von NDrive Germany beschenkt. NDrive ist zwar nicht so gut wie Navigon, Sygic oder TomTom, aber zum Preis von 0€ ist es eine sehr interessante Navigationssoftware. Die App kommt mit dem Kartenmaterial von NAVTEQ daher, einem der führenden Anbieter von Navisoftware. Die Software hat knapp 400MB und beinhaltet nur die deutsche Map. Viele brauchen auch nicht mehr, als einfach Deutschland als Karte. Man sollte hier unbedingt noch heute zugreifen und dieses kostenlose Angebot wahrnehmen. Jedoch funktioniert die Navi App nur bis kurz nach der Cebit. Aber bis dahin kann man sich die App lange genug anschauen um zu überlegen ob man sie kauft.

Eines der aktuellen iTunes Spiele auf Platz 1 ist Angry Birds. Dabei geht es um den Kampf zwischen Vogel und Schwein, wobei der Spieler die Vögel per “Vogelschleuder” (eine Art Steinschleuder für Vögel) lenkt. Die Schweine befinden sich teilweise verbarrikadiert zwischen Holz und Beton, oder auch auf freien Flächen zwischen anderen Hindernissen. Dafür bekommt der Mehr >

Wer wollte nicht schon immer mal wissen, ob der Aldi-Joghurt nicht vielleicht ein Ableger eines bekannten Markenproduktes zu einem wesentlich günstigeren Preis ist ?! Oder wo vielleicht die Milch herkommt, die man im Supermarkt um die Ecke angeboten bekommt?!

Die App Das-ist-drin kann hier dann auf jedenfall weiterhelfen. Mittels der EU Betriebsnummern, die zugelassene Betriebe für die Herstellung, Vermarktung und Verarbeitung tierischer Lebensmittel erhalten, und die auch auf den Verpackungen aufgedruckt ist, kann die App nach dem herstellenden Betrieb suchen. So kann sich auch das ein oder andere Schnäppchen eventuell machen lassen, wenn festgestellt wird, dass  die Eigenmarke aus dem Lebensmittel-Discounter letztendlich doch von einem der Markenhersteller produziert wurde!

Ebenfalls interessant ist auch, dass die Applikation anhand der Geo-Daten Freigabe auf dem iPhone auch produzierende Hersteller in der näheren Umgebung auflisten kann. Es ist doch erstaunlich wieviele Betriebe sich so finden lassen, von deren Existenz man vielleicht doch gar nichts wusste.

Navigation mit dem iPhone? Klar, da gibts doch Navigon und TomTom und… Aber diese Apps haben alle etwas gemeinsam: sie kosten viel Geld. Doch nun gibts eine neue Navi-App im Appstore. Sie ist im Grunde ein Navi wie wir es von Navigon und TomTom her kennen. Nur, das sie nichts kostet! OK, das stimmt nicht ganz. Sie kostet nur bis zum 6. März nichts. Danach wird der Preis erhöht. Die App läuft zwar auch auf dem iPod touch, eine Navigation ist jedoch nur auf dem iPhone 3G oder 3GS möglich. Also, worauf noch warten? Geht los und ladets euch!

Hier noch ein Paar Screenshots des Programms.

Heute erschien Tag Games’ (unter anderem Entwickler von Car Jack Streets) neues Werk “Astro Ranch”. Das Spiel ist eine Mischung aus Harvest Moon und Animal Crossing. Dabei gilt es eine außerirdische Welt zu erkunden und eine prächtige Farm zu erschaffen. Hinzu kommen eine große Anzahl von Minispielen, wie zum Beispiel Angeln, Gold schürfen usw. und eine Anbindung an soziale Plattformen. Der geringe Preis von nur 2,39€ erklärt sich wohl durch die zusätzlich verfügbaren In-App-Käufe. Trotzdem ist das Spiel für jeden Fan von Harvest Moon und/oder Animal Crossing ein Blick wert.

Wie jetzt bekannt wurde will sich Apple den Begriff "Magic Trackpad" als Warenzeichen schützen lassen. Wie am 26. Februar 2010 veröffentlicht wurde, wurde der entsprechende Antrag beim US Patentantrag eingereicht. Der Begriff Magic Trackpad umfasst die Bereiche Hardware, Software und Peripherie. Fraglich ist allerdings, ob Apple sich nur einen Markennamen oder die dahintersteckende Technologie sichern will.

In der Vergangenheit sind zahlreiche Apple Patentanträge bekannt geworden, die es niemals in ein Apple Produkt geschafft haben. Ende Oktober 2009 hatte Apple die Magic Mouse (Apple Store Partnerlink) als Nachfolger der Mighty Mouse vorgestellt. Es ist gut denkbar, dass Apple nun eine externe Erweiterung bzw. ein Zusatzgerät für den iMac und den Mac Pro plant. Eine weitere Alternative ist allerdings auch, dass Apple zukünftig das Trackpad im MacBook, MacBook Pro und MacBook Air als Magic Trackpad bezecihnet.

Heute ist endlich das langerwartete Spiel Astro Ranch im App Store erschienen. Wie erwartet kostet das Spiel 2,39€. Tag Games hat auch schon einen Trailer auf Youtube hochgeladen, den wir euch natürlich nicht vorenthalten wollen:

Auf meinem Schreibtisch stapeln sich die Notizzettel. Auf allen steht geschrieben, was ich noch dringend erledigen muss. Ein richtiger Überblick ist da natürlich nicht gegeben. Da ich das iPhone eh auf allen Wegen immer mit dabei habe, steige ich ab sofort auf Today Todo Pro um. Die Büro-App erinnert mich an alle meine offenen Aufgaben.

So viele Aufgaben, so wenig Zeit. Leider neige ich in Sachen Terminen zum absoluten Chaos. Aus diesem Grund habe ich mir vor zwei Jahren angewöhnt, meine Verabredungen endlich in Outlook zu verwalten. Diese Einträge werden automatisch über MobileMe mit dem iPhone synchronisiert, sodass ich meine Termine immer mit dabei habe. Bei den allgemeinen Vorhaben bin ich nicht so diszipliniert: Ich schreibe weiterhin alles auf Notizzettel und verteile diese auf meinem gesamten Schreibtisch. Klar, dass ich dabei immer wieder einzelne ToDos vergesse und aus den Augen verliere.

Anfang 2007 stellte Apple erstmals des iPhone der Öffentlichkeit vor. Auf der Macworld präsentierte Apple CEO Steve Jobs den ersten Prototypen. Im Juni 2007 war es dann endlich soweit, der US Verkaufsstart lief an. Das Gerät wurde in der 4GB Version für 499,- US$ bzw. für 599,- US$ (8GB) verkauft. Im November kam das iPhone dann endlich nach Deutschland. Schon damals fragte man sich, was kommt nach dem iPhone? im Jahr 2008 blieb die Frage unbeantwortet.

Apple im Juni 2008 lediglich das iPhone 3G als Nachfolger des ursprünglichen iPhone vor. Auch das Jahr 2009 endete ohne neue Apple Produktsparte. Im Jahr 2009 folgte erwartungsgemäß nur das iPhone 3GS als Nachfolger des iPhone 3G. Der Januar 2010 sollte dann die Frage nach dem "Was kommt nach dem iPhone" beantworten.

Apple Mitbegründer Steve Jobs stellte auf der Keynote "Come see our latest creation" das Apple Tablet namens iPad (Apple Store Partnerlink) als neues Apple Produkt vor. Das "nach dem iPhone" war somit geklärt.

Kochen wie die Italiener: Das gerät mit der hochkarätigen iPhone-App “Italienisch Kochen” zum Kinderspiel. Die bekannte Kochbuchautorin Ingeborg Pils und der Food-Fotograf Günter Beer haben sich für das ungewöhnliche digitale Kochbuch zusammengeschlossen und präsentieren 57 handverlesene Rezepte aus Italiens Küchen. Schon seit ich mein iPhone besitze, ärgere ich mich über die Buttons an der linken Seite. Mit denen kann man von Haus aus nämlich nur die Lautstärke verändern, nicht aber zum nächsten Lied springen oder gar die Wiedergabe pausieren. So muss man also immer erst das Gerät aus der Hosentasche holen und kann es nicht bequem “durch” die Hose bedienen.
Kurzerhand begann ich dann, mit der Hilfe von Gi-Lo, mir selbst ein MobileSubstrate Plugin zu schreiben, welches genau das ermöglicht. Herausgekommen ist VolumeButtonExtender, welches auch heute schon kostenlos in Cydia veröffentlicht wurde.

Das Plugin hat die folgenden Funktionen:

• Beide Knöpfe gleichzeitig drücken, um Musikwiedergabe zu pausieren/starten
• Oberen Knopf lange drücken, um zum nächsten Lied zu springen
• Unteren Knopf lange drücken, um zum vorherigen Lied zu springen

Falls ihr noch Verbesserungsvorschläge habt, ab in die Kommentare! Ein Update mit ein paar zusätzlichen Funktionen ist übrigens auch schon geplant, stay tuned.

Im Zuge der Engadget Show hat Aaron Woodman von Microsoft eine kleine Überraschung aus der Hosentasche gezogen: das erste Smartphone mit Windows Phone 7 Series als Betriebssysten.

Hersteller dieses Smartphones ist das Unternehmen LG Electronics, welches bereits bei Windows Mobile 6.5 zu den ersten Partnern von Microsoft gezählt hatte. Wie das erste Smartphone mit der Windows Phone 7 Series heißen wird ist derweil noch unbekannt, da es sich noch um einen Prototypen handelt.

Engadget merkt an, dass das Smartphone nur unmerklich dünner als das iPhone und das Google Nexus One ist, eine QWERTZ-Tastatur mit BING Suchtaste und eine 5 Megapixel Kamera mit Blitz hat. Macht alles einen sehr coolen Eindruck und vor allem Lust auf mehr!

Strimko ist eine Art Sudoku für all diejenigen, denen normales Sudoku irgendwann zu leicht oder langweilig geworden ist. Wer auf Denkspiele abfährt, fährt mit Strimko gut und kann massig Zeit mit den verschiedenen Leveln verbringen. Wer nicht vorankommt: Alle Level sind getestet, “Geht nicht” gibts nicht.

Und dann als erste Zugabe

Lets Tans ist am besten mit dem Legespiel Tangram zu erklären. Manche kennen es vielleicht noch aus dem Kindergarten oder als buntes Holzpuzzle. Man muss je nach Modus zum Beispiel die bunten Tangram-Bausteine in eine bestimmte Form legen. Und irgendwie scheint es vom Platz her garnicht aufzugehen. Auch hier könnt ihr eure grauen Zellen also mal wieder ans Limit bringen.

Außerdem gibt es schon ein Weilchen

Bei text könnt ihr kostenlos Gruppenchats per SMS führen, deutsche Handynummern funktionieren aber momentan nicht. Unter diesem Umstand sehe ich an textplus keinen großen Nutzen, aber vielleicht könnt ihr damit etwas anfangen.

Die Probleme bei den 27 ” iMacs häuften sich in letzter Zeit. Mehr oder weniger nützliche Updates folgten.

Anfang Februar, führte ein erneutes Firmware Update,welches das Displayflackern beheben sollte, zu einem Teilerfolg.

Es blieben noch die Problemkinder, mit dem Gelbstich, welche nun auch endgültig beseitigt wurden. Dies geht aus einer ersten ofiziellen Stellungnahme von Apple gegenüber Gizmodo hervor :

” “We’ve addressed the issues that caused display flickering and yellow tint. Customers concerned that their iMac is affected should contact AppleCare.”

“These two short sentences might not look like much, but the statement is Apple’s first open acknowledgment of the jaundiced screen issue, and it identifies the problem as one worthy of AppleCare solutions.”

Die Kunden, mit einem weiterhin kränkelndem iMac sollen sich an den Apple – Support wenden.

Apple sugeriert weiterhin, dass die neuen Geräte fehlerfrei seien und zudem den Problemkandidaten sofort geholfen wird.

Auch im Hinblick auf die Lieferzeit soll es Besserungen geben. In den USA muss man im Schnitt 3 bis 5 Werktage auf seinen neuen 27″ iMac warten. Bei uns und im restlichen Europa sind die Lieferzeiten bislang immer noch bei 2 Wochen angesetzt, jedoch mit einer stets sinkenden Tendenz.

Whether you are simply curious, or truly unable to perceive differences between certain colors, Color Curious is for you - it is a simple app designed to answer a simple question: "What color is it?"

How does it work?

Take a photo with your camera or pick one from the photo albums on your device (including saved photos from Web pages and emails). With the photo loaded into Color Curious, you are free to explore it to any depth using standard gestures such as scrolling to position the image and pinching/double-tapping to zoom in and out. Crosshairs in the center of the screen mark the point at which color names are reported instantly, in real time, as you explore the image.

What kind of color names does it use?

Color Curious uses a standard set of color terms based on the NBS/ISCC system - idiosyncratic, meaningless color names are not used. Color space is divided into fifteen distinct hues such as "yellow", "greenish yellow", "yellowish green", etc. For each hue, degrees of saturation and brightness are specified by modifiers such as "vivid", "dark", "pale", etc. The system produces color names that are meaningful and understandable without requiring additional reference, such as color charts or samples.

What makes Color Curious different from similar apps?

Picking colors by touching the area of interest directly is not optimal because the finger tends to obscure the view, so you never know exactly where on the image you touched. Color Curious does not have this problem, so you can always see precisely, down to the pixel, where on the image the color name comes from, while enjoying a fully interactive, explorative experience.

1. Beschreib doch mal kurz dein aktuelles Mac-Setup.
1. Please describe your current Mac setup (if available, send a picture of your working space with your Mac(s) as an attachment).

Meine Arbeitsausstattung besteht im Moment aus einem (Late 2008) 15″ MacBook Pro mit 4GB Ram. Ich habe dazu eine Targot Bluetoothmaus (ich werde mir aber bald eine Magic Mouse zulegen) und ich habe noch eine externe 1TB Western Digital Festplatte. FireWire, nichts weiter.

My current workstation consists of a late-2008 15″ Macbook Pro, 4GB RAM. I also have a Targus bluetooth mouse (but I’ll upgrade to a Magic Mouse someday) and a 1TB WD external HD. Firewire, absolutely.

2. Welche Programme benutzt du am meisten an einem typischen Arbeitstag? Und welche findest du besonders toll in Sachen (UI-) Design?
2. In which apps do you spend most of your time during a typical blogging day? Which are your favorite ones considering their design.

An einem typischen Tag? Ich würde sagen Safari (logischerweise), Mail (erneut logischerweise), aber die meiste Zeit Tweetie, Things und Notational Velocity. Und in Bezug aufs Design bin ich total Fan von Programmen wie LittleSnapper, Hyperspaces (eine unglaubliche Zeitersparnis mit toller Oberfläche) und Ecoute.

During my typical day? I’d say Safari (of course), Mail (of course, again) but most of all Tweetie, Things and Notational Velocity. As for the design, I’m totally into apps like LittleSnapper, Hyperspaces (huge timesaver, awesome UI) and Ecoute.

3. Du hast MacStories im September letzen Jahres (2009) mit einem neuen Design und dem MacStories Festival “erneut” gestartet. Seitdem hast du unheimlich viele Twitter-Follower und Feedabnonnenten bekommen. Was hast du dabei über Onlinemarketing gelernt und was ist deiner Meinung nach wichtig, um online Erfolg zu haben?
3. You relaunched Macstories back in september with an all new design and the MacStories Festival. Since then you got many many new followers on Twitter and RSS subscribers. What did you learn about online marketing and what is needed to be sucessful online?

Das ist eine große Frage und ich bin mir auch nicht sicher, ob ich wirklich Tipps geben kann. Aber was ich sagen kann ist, dass Leute immer neue Programme austesten wollen und ich es mag, neue Programme von jungen Entwickler vorzustellen und zu vermarkten. Also, dachte ich, ein Bericht, kombiniert mit einem Gewinnspiel wäre doch eine gute Idee um ein Programm, eine App herauszubringen und die Nutzer dazu zu bringen, sich damit auseinanderzusetzen. Dann stand das neue Design ins Haus und ich dachte mir “Komm, wir machen das jetzt richtig fett.” Ich begann Entwickler und Designer, die ich kannte, zu kontaktieren und fragte sie, ob sie Lizenzen ihre Programme zur Verfügung stellen und mir noch ein paar Fragen beantworten können. Das MacStories Festival war ein riesiger Erfolg, weil es ein großes Gewinnspiel mit hochwertigen Programmen und Inhalten von bekannten Leuten verknüpft hat. Noch besser war aber der “Apps Tree”, den ich für Weihnachten geplant hatte; dieser Post gelangt sogar auf TechCrunch (und nein, ich musste dafür keine Laptops verlosen).

Was das Marketing betrifft, denke ich nicht, dass ich viel “gelernt” hätte, Ich finde nur, dass ich mittlerweile weiß, wie viele Dinge zustande kommen und wie ich diese dann bearbeiten kann. Wenn diese Entwicklung “lernen” ist, dann hat mir Chatten mit Entwicklern und Nutzer viel geholfen.

This is a though question, and I’m not sure I can really give an advice. All I can say it’s that people love to try new apps, and I love to promote new apps made by young developers. So I though writing a review and combining it with a giveaway would be a nice idea to “launch” an app and make people talk about it. Then the redesign came along, and I said “man, we gotta spread the hell out of it”. I started contacting developers and designers I know asking them if they would be up to offer some licenses and answer some question. The MacStories Festival was a huge success, as it succesfully combined a big giveaway with great quality, original content from famous people. Even better, the “Apps Tree” I launched for Christmas was a bigger success, and it also got featured on TechCrunch (and no, I didn’t give away any laptops for that).

As for the marketing, I don’t think I’ve “learned” something, I just think that I know how many things happen and how I can handle them. If that’s learning, then chatting with devs and users taught me a lot about this world.

4. Ein anderes deiner Projekte neben MacStories ist der angekündigte Helvetiblog. Aber seit Oktober haben wir nichts mehr davon gehört. Gibt es ihn noch? Wann wird er dann vorraussichtlich starten und kannst du uns vielleicht schon etwas über ihn verraten?
4. One of your other projects besides MacStories is the announced Helvetiblog. But we haven’t heard anything since the end of october. Is it still alive, when will it probaly launch and can you tell us something about it?

Helvetiblog lebt noch, es gibt ihn, ja. Der Start wurde nur verlegt, da MacStories sehr groß geworden ist, aber ich hoffe, dass ich in den nächsten Monaten ein wenig mehr zeigen kann.

Helvetiblog is alive, it’s there. The launch got delayed because of MacStories getting huge, but i definitely hope to reveal more in the upcoming months.

5. Ist MacStories ein Vollzeitjob für dich oder nur ein großes Hobby? Beschreib dann doch mal deinen typischen Arbeitstag.
5. Is MacStories your own, full-time job or just a big hobby? And please describe your typical working day.

MacStories ist mein Job. ein hat zwar als ein “großes Hobby angefangen, aber als ich dann das große Potenzial entdeckt habe, daraus ein Leben zu erschaffen, wurde es ernster und ernster.
Jetzt wache ich jeden Tag gegen 10 Uhr auf und gehe sofort an die Kaffeemaschine. Ich liebe Kaffe, er hilft mir konzentriert und wach zu bleiben. Danach checke ich meine Tweets und Mails, die ich in der Nacht erhalten habe und beginne danach zu schreiben. Normalerweise arbeite ich bis spät in die Nacht, manchmal sogar bis 5 oder 6 Uhr morgens. Glücklicherweise habe ich eine tolle Freundin, die die Situation voll und ganz versteht und mit hilft mich zu organisieren und Sachen fertig zu kriegen.

MacStories is my job. It started out as a “big hobby”, but as soon as I realized I had a few possibilities to make a life out of it – things got serious. I usually wake up at 10 and go straight to the coffee machine. I love coffee, it helps me in concentrating and staying up. Then I check my tweets and feeds, answer emails I receive during the night and then I start writing. I usually work until late night, sometimes even 5 or 6am. Fortunately, I have an awesome girlfriend that understands the situation and daily helps me with accounting and getting things done.

6. Alle Programme, die du auf MacStories zeigst, sind neu, toll und oftmals Dinge, die ich vorher noch nie gesehen habe. Wo findest du Tipps und Quellen für diese Programme? Ist es eine große, gut organisierte Gemeinschaft von Lesern/Entwicklern etc. oder andere Dinge?
6. All the apps you show off at MacStories are new, hot designed stuff that I personally did not se until you review it. Where do you get the tips for these apps? Is it a well organised community or other sources ?

Oh, das ist der schwerste Teil meiner Arbeit. Ich habe viele Feeds abonniert, aber das ist eher der kleinere Teil. Das Geheimnis liegt in sozialen Netzwerken: Twitter, Zootool, Flickr, Forums… Ich verbringe fast 3 Stunden am Tag mit Lesen von Texten, Schreiben mit Menschen – daher finde ich so viele neue Dinge. Seit neuestem kontaktieren mich sogar Entwickler und ragen, ob ich nicht ihre neuen Apps testen will.

Oh, that’s the hardest part of the job. I’m subscribed to a lot of feeds, but those are the smallest part. The secret is in social networking: Twitter, Zootool, Flickr, forums: I spend almost 3 hours a day talking with people and reading stuff, that’s where I discover new apps. It’s recently that developers are contacting me to review their new apps.

7. Wie schaffst du es, so viel Zeug für MacStories und deine anderen (persönlichen) Dinge zu organisieren (z.B neue Apps testen, Leserfragen und Interviews wie dieses hier zu benatworten)?

Ich glaube, 2010 wird ein tolles Jahr: Das iPad, vielleicht iPhone OS 4.0 und erste Infos über Mac OS X 10.7. Da wird cooles Zeug kommen. Und für mich perönlich: ich arbeite an einigen großen Neuerungen auf MacStories, einigen geheimen Projekten und (hoffentlich) einer angen Reise in die Staaten. Ihr werdet aber schon sehr bald mehr darüber hinausfinden.

I expect 2010 to a be a great year: the iPad, possibly iPhone OS 4 and first details of 10.7. There’s great stuff coming along the way. As for my personal life, I’m working on some *big* new improvements for MacStories, new secret projects and (I hope) a long trip to the US. You’ll find out more about everything very, very soon.

Pünktlich zum Start der CeBIT in Hannover werden einige kostenlose Extras für das iPhone erscheinen. Dazu zählt ein gratis Messeführer, eine Navigationssoftware sowie das bekannte Mobile-TV von T-Mobile. All diese Apps sind jedoch nur für die Dauer der CeBIT-Messe kostenlos.

Der offizielle CeBIT-Messefürhrer ermöglicht es den Messplan mit dem iPhone abzurufen. So lässt sich nicht nur die Lage bestimmter Stände bestimmen, sowie der optimale Weg über das Messegelände ermitteln, sondern es können auch viele Informationen zu den dort vertretenen Anbietern abgerufen werden. So weiß man gleich zu Beginn der Messe welchen Stand man auf keinen Fall verpassen darf!

Ein weiteres CeBIT-Special besteht darin dass der Anbieter NDrive seine Navigationssoftware für die Dauer der CeBIT deutschlandweit kostenlos anbietet. Für eine problemlose Anfahrt nach Hannover ist also gesorgt! Bei der App handelt es sich um eine Onboard-Lösung, bei der das gesamte Kartenmaterial auf den Speicher des iPhones kopiert wird. Sobald die kostenlose Nutzungsphase vorüber ist, hat man die Wahl die App kostenpflichtig behalten zu können.

Auch T-Mobile bietet ein CeBIT-Special an: Und zwar Mobile-TV. Normalerweise zahlt man für das Basis-Paket 7,50 Euro im Monat. Eine schöne Gelegenheit um herauszufinden ob das Ganze etwas für einen ist und ob man sich den Luxus auch zukünftig leisten möchte.

Anfang der Woche hatten wir eine neue Umfrage zum Thema iPad (Apple Store Partnerlink) gestartet. Die Frage lautete: "Welches iPad werdet ihr Euch zulegen ?" Nun ist die Umfrage beendet und die Ergebnisse stehen fest. Diese möchten wir euch selbstverständlich nicht vorenthalten.

Anscheinend scheidet das Apple noch immer die Geister. Knapp über ein Drittel (34,3 Prozent) aller Umfrage-Teilnehmer stimmten für "Ich werde mir kein iPad kaufen". Platz 2 der Umfrage belegte das größte iPad. Die 64GB Variante des UMTS Modell konnte 18,9 Prozent der Stimmen für sich gewinnen. Platz 3 ging mit 10,8 Prozent der Stimmen an das kleinste Modell (iPad Wi-Fi 16GB).

Auf den weiteren Plätzen folgen das iPad Wi-Fi 32GB (8,8 Prozent), das iPad Wi-Fi 64GB (7,7 Prozent) und das iPad 3G 16GB (7,7 Prozent). 6,1 Prozent der Umfrage Teilnehmer scheinen noch unsicher und konnten sich für keines der Modelle entscheiden. An letzter Position steht das iPad 3G 32GB mit 5,7 Prozent der Stimmen.

Gegenüber dem Magazin “Wirtschaftswoche” äußerte sich Intel-Chef Paul Otellini positiv hinsichtlich eines verstärkten Einstieg in das Smartphone-Geschäft. Dies sei der beste Weg um auch zukünftig die eigene Position weiter stärken zu können. Apple sei dabei einer der wichtigsten Kunden die in Zukunft denkbar wären.

Dabei hofft Paul Otellini offenbar auch an dem Erfolg zukünftiger iPhone- und iPad-Generationen teilhaben zu können:

Wir würden natürlich gerne beide Produkte mit unseren Chips bestücken. Dafür werden wir so lange werben, bis es uns gelingt.

Viel hat Intel im Bereich der Smartphones derweil allerdings noch nicht vor zu weisen. Es ist jedoch deutlich zu erkennen dass der weltgrößte Prozessorhersteller seine Bemühungen in dem Bereich intensiviert. Anfang dieses Jahres wurde das GW990 von LG vorgestellt, welches mit einem mobilen Intel-Prozessor ausgestattet ist. Auch entwickelte man zusammen mit dem finnischen Handyriesen Nokia das mobile Betriebssystem Meego.

Derzeit ist nach Einschätzung vieler Analysten, bei Apple auch nicht die Absicht erkennbar dies zu ändern.

With TUAW's Your First Apple series, we let you get a glimpse of our own histories with the Mac. My own history with Apple's computers has been a bit convoluted. The first Apple computer, in fact the first computer of any kind I remember using, was an Apple II . I was in kindergarten in Saudi Arabia at the time, so I don't really remember much about those early experiences. Like many people of my generation, when I returned to the US I went to schools that had computer labs crammed full of Apple IIe computers. Of course, the only programs that were ever run on my elementary school's Apples were marginally "educational" games like Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?, Odell Lake, and the massively popular Oregon Trail. Meanwhile, my family had a KayPro PC at home, which meant my dad had to teach an eight-year-old kid how to navigate through the amber-lettered jungles of DOS -- something I'm glad I'll never have to do with my own kids.

The Apple IIe was the only computer I used in school through 1990. I spent most of seventh grade cooking up little text-based adventure games in BASIC, and I even learned some rudimentary drawing and audio programming, all of which I forgot long ago. In mid-1990, the school revamped our computer lab with brand-new Macintosh Classics: the first Mac I ever used, the first machine I used that had a hard drive, and the first time I ever used a GUI to interact with a computer. Oddly enough, despite the huge leap in capabilities the Mac Classic had over the Apple IIe, we spent half of eighth grade using the Mac to learn how to type. I guess I should be thankful I learned to touch-type way back then, but spending several months on typing tutor software was a hard sell after spending the previous year doing actual programming.

After that first year with the Mac, my experiences with Apple's computers went through some rollercoaster-like ups and downs. Click "read more" to find out why.

Some time in the early 90's, my dad dumped his KayPro for a custom-built, unbranded, 386-based PC running Windows 3.11, which I inherited from him after he upgraded yet again. It was the first computer I had all to myself. After learning my way around the Mac's interface, learning Windows 3.11 took all of five minutes. The PC also had color graphics, which was a definite improvement over the black-and-white Mac Classics at school. I didn't get much actual work done on the PC, though, because nothing I produced on it was compatible with my high school's Macs; I mostly used the PC for games.

My high school actually had two computer labs: one full of state-of-the-art Macs for basic computer training and programming, and one full of ancient, DOS-running IBM PCs used for business-related classes. I spent ninth and tenth grade learning how to program in HyperCard, which I used to create a couple of graphic adventure games complete with an X-Y navigation system that took quite a while to code properly. One program I developed in tenth grade on the Mac LC III was an Aliens vs. Predator adventure game, with graphics taken straight from the Dark Horse comic series and audio from both the Aliens and Predator films. I also created a HyperCard-based trojan to mess with the other kids in the lab. It was basically just a HyperCard stack that, once launched, would auto-generate new cards until the RAM filled up and the Mac crashed. High school was a high point in my experiences with Macs, but for the rest of the 90s and the first few years of the 2000s, it was all downhill.

Once I got out of high school, my long relationship with the Mac went on an extended hiatus. After joining the Navy in 1995 I hardly used computers of any kind for several years, to say nothing of Macs or the Internet. For almost four years I barely touched a PC for anything other than playing video games. Macs didn't register on my radar at all, and the few times I came across one, I had the same reaction that a lot of today's Mac haters still have: "For as much as they're charging, I can't even get any decent games for this thing?"

In late 1999 I finally started using the internet on a regular basis via a 56k dialup connection through my roommate's ancient and thoroughly crappy Performa. I don't know which model Performa it was or even what OS it was using -- it was either OS 8 or System 7 -- but I was not impressed with that machine at all. When my roommate offered to give me that Mac in exchange for me paying his part of the rent for a couple months, I turned him down, because I hated almost everything about that Performa. When I moved in with my girlfriend of the time, she had two computers: some anonymous box from HP running Windows 98, and an iMac with OS 9. Since the iMac didn't have any games for it, wasn't compatible with our cable modem, and had that horrible piece of garbage hockey puck mouse, I wouldn't go near the thing. I preferentially veered toward the HP machine for everything I did.

From mid-2000 to early 2003 I once again barely even saw or used a Mac except for the handful of times I visited a Mac zealot friend of mine who lived in Seattle. I inherited yet another ancient computer from another friend of mine for my home use, one even older and less capable than the Performa: some Gateway box running Windows 95. Unable to even hook that machine up to the internet or run 3D games of any kind, the Gateway saw little use for the two years I had it.

After almost ten years of using computers solely for internet access and the occasional bit of gaming, I'd become sort of a luddite. Beyond basic word processing and web browsing, I really had no clue how to use a computer anymore. I ended up becoming a Mac switcher in early 2003, completely against my will, when I moved in with my wife. She had a dual 1GHz G4 Power Mac running OS X, and for the first couple of months using it, I had no idea what I was doing. I think my ignorance showed through enough that my wife got paranoid of letting me use her Mac at all. I eventually got the hang of it, but it was a painful process; I insisted on using Internet Explorer, stayed well clear of OS updates, and didn't even attempt to do anything out of the ordinary with her Mac.

It was only after buying a used PowerBook G3 off of eBay for $200 that I really started figuring the Mac out. In the process of upgrading the processor to a G4, upping the RAM, swapping out the hard drive, and hacking the thing to run OS X Panther and Tiger (the model of PowerBook I bought was supposed to max out at Jaguar), I quickly gained an appreciation for the ins and outs of OS X. In the process, I reached the point where I flat-out refused to use Windows unless I absolutely had to for some reason. Within the space of a year, I also went from being completely ignorant about computers to being free tech support for all my friends; and for the few of them still using Windows, my first bit of tech advice is almost always to stop using Windows. OS X may or may not be inherently "better" than Windows, but over the past several years I've figured out that I only get the urge to throw my Mac out the window once or twice a month versus once every five minutes with the average Windows box.

My wife upgraded to a MacBook in 2007, so I inherited her Power Mac -- just in time, as it turned out, because even after all its upgrades, my PowerBook was definitely showing its age, particularly in the way it liked to chew through hard drives. In February of 2008 I bought the 17" MacBook Pro I'm still using today -- the first brand-new computer I've ever owned.

It's been a long, weird ride -- BASIC programming, typing tutors, HyperCard programming, then close to ten years of neo-Ludditism -- to where I am now, in a house full of Apple-branded gadgets, most of which would have sounded like science fiction when I sat down in front of a Mac Classic for the first time twenty years ago.

Switch to another favorite's group with a swipe or use the quick jump feature at the top of the screen. my favs doesn't limit your number of favorites groups and you can add a contact multiple times in a group or to multiple groups. Use the quick jump screen to:

BikePRO30 is a low cost cycling computer/course plotter, for use by casual cycling enthusiasts. It logs the date, duration, distance, and average speed of each trip, plus allows additional data to be added such as weather, location info, and a trip diary for other details. It is easy to use, just touch the bicycle icon to start and touch the stop sign to stop and automatically log the trip to a file. There is also an adjustable pacer to help keep you on your desired pace. The trip info can be edited or a specific trip deleted from the log. The log is sortable by date, time, and distance, and displays a cumulative total for distance and time for all trips. BikePRO30 also offers a mapping capability, where your trips are mapped and a pin placed every .5 miles for reference. Touching a pin will display the distance to that point and the time since the trip started. BikePRO30 can handle call interruptions, your trip will resume automatically after the call is finished - with virtually no loss of data (some error will be induced because the distance traveled while the unit was off will be calculated as a straight line from the last auto saved point). Most bike apps can't handle interruptions like this! Note that if the network is not available, mapping will use cached data if any. This allows BikePRO30 to work in areas with no network coverage. For best results, be sure to map the area (pan and zoom the map display) when network is available so data will be ready when needed.
